My Involvement In the community
Heights Community Council:
The Heights Community Council is the neighborhood council for the Heights neighborhood where the University of Cincinnati is located. We act as liaisons between the City of Cincinnati, students living in the Heights area, and UC. A few projects we are currently working on are a comprehensive rental property database for the Heights area to facilitate the rental process for both landlords and UC students. We hope eventually to include a fire safety awareness aspect of the project for both students and landlords in light of the Digby fire that occurred January 2013. We are also working together with students and community members through the Preservation Action Network in order to effectively organize to oppose the opposed demolition of Christy's and Clifton Natural Foods. These businesses offer unique options to UC students and are an integral part of the community. Saving Christy's is a cause close to our council as it is our regular monthly spot which you can see in the above image. In addition to attending meetings I maintain the Facebook and Twitter pages for the Heights Council and share articles and information about issues that will effect students and the Heights area.

Green Umbrella:
The Green Umbrella is a non-profit regional sustainability alliance with member organizations which include non-profits, educational institutions and businesses. The organization is split up into 8 Action Teams which each focus on improving the sustainability of the Greater Cincinnati area from a different perspective. I have worked with the Outdoor Recreation Team since fall 2012. I attend monthly meetings with member organizations, and have provided input on how to increase outdoor recreation opportunities and involvement in the Cincinnati area for the Green Cincinnati Plan being drawn up by the Office of Environmental Quality for the City of Cincinnati. I have recently played a facilitation role in connecting Green Umbrella programming organizers working on an Adventure Clubs program through Cincinnati Public Schools with groups at the University of Cincinnati such as the Mountaineering Club in order to begin to develop a mentoring partnership. I am now working with the Local Food Action Team as a research intern to help develop a comprehensive plan for the implementation of a "10% Shift Campaign" in the Greater Cincinnati area to encourage local citizens to spend at least 10% of their food budget on food sourced from within the local region.
